This year's top design trends

With a new year comes the clear emergence of new home design trends. Here, we share some of our favourite trends making frequent appearances just lately. One thing is quite obvious: we want to make our homes an absolute pleasure to spend time in, as well as being flexible spaces that families can relax and work in together. That said, it is not all about practicality — some of the trends are all about making a bold design statement and simply having fun in our homes.

HERRINGBONE FLOORING

Also often referred to as parquet flooring (although parquet actually comes in laying patterns other than herringbone) this is a trend that is absolutely everywhere right now. Herringbone flooring has many benefits, as well as looking super stylish. Not only can it make small spaces feel bigger, but it is also a great way to add texture and interest to a larger space. Although solid timber herringbone flooring can be expensive and time consuming to lay, there are other options, including engineered planks, luxury vinyl tile and laminate. You could even consider timber-effect ceramic or porcelain floor tiles laid in a herringbone pattern.

Ahead of the curve

London-based architecture and ideas studio, CAN, extended this home to make it suitable for the needs of a growing family, placing an emphasis on natural materials and a unique approach to design. The resulting renovation turned the once-disconnected ground floor of this east London terrace into an open-plan kitchen and dining area spilling into the garden through a bespoke curved window and oversized glazed door.
