Home for global citizens Janet and Paul is the best place on earth to come back to. They’ve come and gone, almost selling on three occasions, but just couldn’t let go of their little 1860s sandstone terrace on Sydney’s northern beaches. So, instead they made the ultimate commitment – a major renovation tailored just for them

Janet felt connected to the home from the moment she stepped inside, back in 2002. Her friends thought she was crazy, but she had an immediate vision for the dilapidated worker’s cottage, that looked beyond the unfortunate sagging stucco ceiling and Mission Brown paint. “Everything has soul and certain places speak to you – that was how it was with this place,” she says. There was only one bedroom and it sat on just 118sqm, but the fireplace warmed the original sandstone walls and kauri pine floors and that was it – love; on-again-off-again, often long-distance, but forever.
