KP Intersessional Kicks Off Reform Cycle

June 2017

The 2017 Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional meeting that took place in Perth on May 1st-4th focused on the start of the three-year review cycle of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) in order to strengthen the global rough diamond monitoring system.

KP Intersessional Kicks Off Reform Cycle

The Kimberley Process, a partnership between government, the global diamond industry and civil society, was established in 2003 to eliminate conflict diamonds, ensuring that diamonds have not been used to finance or perpetuate conflicts.

Australia hosted two special forums during the Intersessional meeting. The first explored cooperation between indigenous communities and the mining sector in Australia. The second looked at ways to address evolving consumer expectations, and ensure fairness and sustainability across the entire diamond value chain.

During Australia’s term as chair, the KP will concentrate on strengthening the scheme’s implementation, which will include ways to enhance the security of rough diamond shipments and certificates.

Julie Bishop, Australia’s minister for foreign affairs, said, “We will also lead a comprehensive review of the KP to strengthen its integrity and ensure that the Process is well placed to lead international standard setting in the diamond trade into the future.”

“Australia has a strong economic interest in a sustainable and resilient mining sector and will continue to work with all stakeholders to forge a stronger and more comprehensive Process in relation to the diamond trade,” Bishop added.
