ZENG FANZHI

Zeng's powerfully expressive portrayals of humans are celebrated for their rich visual and historical complexity. Born in Wuhan in 1964, the Chinese artist came of age in a period when the country was undergoing industrialisation on steroids. Drawing from that, he created his iconic Mask series that depicted businessmen and politicians with their faces concealed under masks to disguise their inner demons. He went on to experience much critical and commercial success, having exhibited at the biggest museums and biennales internationally.

WARNING: CONTAINS GRAPHIC CONTENT

Besides bringing in some of the best movies from around the globe (nearly every one is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes), homegrown independent film distributor Anticipate Pictures is known for its hyper-stylish, often-cheeky scroll-stopping artworks promoting said flicks — after all, the company was founded in 2016, when Instagram was starting to seriously blow up.

CINEMA PARADISO

The house of Chanel has been a committed champion of the film world since founder Gabrielle Chanel started dressing the actresses from the United Artists studio at the request of American producer Samuel Goldwyn in the 1930s. Besides styling stars on screen and off, the brand has been an active supporter of international movie festivals, institutions and directors (local auteur Eric Khoo was one of them); has helped to restore classics such as the enigmatic Last Year at Marienbad (1961); and often draws inspiration from cinema. For Cruise 2025/26, it pays homage to the glamour of the silver screen as well as Coco Chanel's decades-spanning friendship with legendary Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti. Here's an exclusive closeup look at the collection and the many ways it's coded la dolce vita.

CALLING THE SHORTS

The power of a short film goes beyond its ability to pander to shrinking attention spans. As Thong Kay Wee, the programme director of the Singapore International Film Festival, explains, \"the format is often more inclusive because of its lower production cost, giving space for niche stories and creative freedom to exist\", adding that \"historically, short films have always been an integral feature of local cinema\".

DAYS OF BEING WILD

It began life as the Golden Theatre - Singapore's largest cinema when it opened in 1973 – and was transformed 11 years ago by Karen Tan, Sharon Tan and Blaise Trigg-Smith into The Projector. A bold, indie institution residing in Golden Mile Tower, it challenged the rules of movie-going and became the beating heart of the city's alternative film scene. To survive though, The Projector had to be more than just a cinema - and so it evolved into a space for creative risk-taking, subculture and community. Living up to its tag line, \"Not Your Average Cinema\", it rewrote what a film venue could be. Three months on from its unexpected closure this August, co-founder Karen reflects on more than a decade of cinematic rebellion, cultural experimentation and what it meant to build - and lose - a space like no other.
