SARTORIALISTS

JOANNE CHEAH, 29, RETAIL ASSOCIATE

What are you wearing? “A Comme des Garcons jacket, an Issey Miyake top, and a Molly Goddard dress.” Describe your sense of style.“Boy wearing girls’ clothes; girl wearing boys’ clothes.”

BEFORE STREET STYLE BECAME THE INFLUENCER-DOMINATED, DO-IT-FOR-THE-’GRAM FASHION WEEK SPORT THAT IT’S EVOLVED INTO, IN THE PAST DECADE, IT WAS A MORE SPONTANEOUS, LESS SPLASHY AFFAIR. THE LATE GODFATHER OF THE SCENE, BILL CUNNINGHAM, AND HIS STYLISH DOCUMENTARY OF WHAT NEW YORKERS – CELEBRITY OR NOT – WORE AS THEY WENT ABOUT THEIR DAY-TO-DAY LIVES IN THE ’70S THROUGH TO THE EARLY AUGHTS. THE NOW-DEFUNCT JAPANESE MAGAZINE FRUITS AND ITS IMMORTALISATION OF ’90S HARAJUKU SUBCULTURES AND THEIR INDIVIDUALISTIC FASHION TASTES. EVEN THE HOTSHOTS OF THE BLOGGER GENERATION – NAMES LIKE TOMMY TON AND SCOTT SCHUMAN OF THE SARTORIALIST FAME WHO HAVE SINCE LARGELY TRADED STREET STYLE FOR COMMERCIAL WORK – CAPTURED A VERY DIFFERENT SIDE TO THE INDUSTRY AND ITS FOLLOWERS IN THEIR EARLY YEARS: MODELS OFF DUTY, CAMERA-SHY EDITORS ON THE GO, THE PASSER-BY WHO GENUINELY LOVES DRESSING UP. SO WITH THE GLOBAL FASHION WEEKS MUCH QUIETER THAN BEFORE SINCE THE ONSET OF THE PANDEMIC, WE THOUGHT: WHY NOT POUND THE STREETS OF SINGAPORE AND BRING BACK THAT CELEBRATION OF REAL STYLE?

CINEMA PARADISO

The house of Chanel has been a committed champion of the film world since founder Gabrielle Chanel started dressing the actresses from the United Artists studio at the request of American producer Samuel Goldwyn in the 1930s. Besides styling stars on screen and off, the brand has been an active supporter of international movie festivals, institutions and directors (local auteur Eric Khoo was one of them); has helped to restore classics such as the enigmatic Last Year at Marienbad (1961); and often draws inspiration from cinema. For Cruise 2025/26, it pays homage to the glamour of the silver screen as well as Coco Chanel's decades-spanning friendship with legendary Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti. Here's an exclusive closeup look at the collection and the many ways it's coded la dolce vita.

CALLING THE SHORTS

The power of a short film goes beyond its ability to pander to shrinking attention spans. As Thong Kay Wee, the programme director of the Singapore International Film Festival, explains, \"the format is often more inclusive because of its lower production cost, giving space for niche stories and creative freedom to exist\", adding that \"historically, short films have always been an integral feature of local cinema\".

PORTRAITS OF LADIES ON FIRE

Launched in 2011, Miu Miu Women’s Tales is the longest-running platform supporting the creation of short films by women and about women – or, more specifically, femininity and its relationship with vanity. Its latest commission is helmed by the incisive French filmmaker Alice Diop, whose short Fragments for Venus is a powerful reclamation of identity pertinent to the times.

DAYS OF BEING WILD

It began life as the Golden Theatre - Singapore's largest cinema when it opened in 1973 – and was transformed 11 years ago by Karen Tan, Sharon Tan and Blaise Trigg-Smith into The Projector. A bold, indie institution residing in Golden Mile Tower, it challenged the rules of movie-going and became the beating heart of the city's alternative film scene. To survive though, The Projector had to be more than just a cinema - and so it evolved into a space for creative risk-taking, subculture and community. Living up to its tag line, \"Not Your Average Cinema\", it rewrote what a film venue could be. Three months on from its unexpected closure this August, co-founder Karen reflects on more than a decade of cinematic rebellion, cultural experimentation and what it meant to build - and lose - a space like no other.

XTRA CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

Welcome to a new golden era of oddly specific hobbies. Want to make a book by hand? Have your most personal memories etched into a record? Or how about dressing like a 14th-century elf at a fantasy-inspired fair? These days, chances are that there's someone else who's just as into such activities as you are - and there are more avenues than ever here to find your people, fuelled by a craving for connection and a creative escape in a too-fast digital world.
