Mandip Gill, who has been excellent as Jodie Whittaker’s assistant Yaz, looks back on her thrilling debut series of Doctor Who – and ahead to the New Year special

Time Of My Life!

It seems like only yesterday that Jodie Whittaker exploded onto our screens and changed the face of British TV as the first female Doctor – but a lot has happened in the months since her debut.

Chris Chibnall’s bold vision for the iconic sci-fi series has been acclaimed as a landmark moment in the show’s rich 55-year history. It’s been a fantastic journey for viewers, but what was it like to be at the centre of it all?

‘It’s hard to understand what we’ve been part of right now,’ says Mandip Gill, who has won rave reviews for her performance as the Doctor’s pal Yaz Khan. ‘People have said it’s an important moment in the show’s history, but that hasn’t really sunk in for me yet. Maybe when I’m out of the series I’ll look back and realise how massive it was.
