You’d think life couldn’t get any worse for the women of Gilead. Stripped of their human rights, most have been forced into some form of slave labour – from the baby-producing Handmaids to the Marthas (domestic servants), and the Jezebels (prostitutes).

But in this week’s episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, prepare to meet those with the lowest status of all – the Unwomen.

Consisting of lesbians, criminals and other ‘undesirables’, the Unwomen have been banished to the radioactive badlands called the Colonies, where they are made to clean up toxic waste until they die.
