It was in the early 1970s that David Bowie’s career really took off with a succession of hit albums and singles, and the adoption of different and flamboyant alter egos such as Ziggy Stardust.

But for film-maker Francis Whately, who has made previous films about Bowie’s final recordings and constant reinvention, it’s the early career of the iconic singer – born in London as David Jones – that is the most rewarding to investigate.
