The nuns and midwives head for the chilly Outer Hebrides to lend a helping hand

Mercy mission

There’s an extra chill in the air for our favourite nuns and midwives this Christmas as they leave an already bracing Poplar and head northwards to the even colder climes of the Outer Hebrides in the festive instalment of BBC1 period drama Call the Midwife.

As we rejoin the residents of Nonnatus House, several of the team have been laid low with the flu, and forthright Mother Mildred (Miriam Margolyes) wants to help them convalesce by taking them to the Outer Hebrides to set up a new branch house and clinic on the remote Scottish islands. The locals there are in desperate need of assistance because there are no doctors or nurses nearby to treat them.
