From crusading journalist Holly in Press to indomitable horse trainer May in Peaky Blinders, Charlotte Riley has played plenty of strong women in her time.
But while her current TV character – harassed single mum Juliette in ITV crime drama Dark Heart – is equally spirited, she also has a far more troubled side.
‘Dark Heart is bold and dark and gritty and I’ve never played a character like Juliette before,’ says the 36-year-old actress. ‘It has been something really different for me. Juliette has a tough exterior, but she’s vulnerable.’
