David Walliams is not the first entertainer in his family, as he discovered when he researched his family tree for the current series of BBC1 genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are?.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge and children’s author investigated his maternal line, and was intrigued to learn the story of his great-great-grandfather William Haines, who was left blind following a botched cataract operation in 1884.
