Airships galore, ye olde magicks, and more

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

Every game deserves a second chance, this more than most. Originally released in PS2’s twilight years, when PS3 was glimmering on the horizon, FFXII’s time to shine was sadly limited when it embarked on its maiden voyage over a decade ago. Now sailing onto PS4 in the form of an imaginative remaster with a revamped combat system, this old-school JRPG proves age is just a number.

Opening with a royal wedding procession through the city of Rabanastre, FFXII showers you with drama from the outset. Featuring extravagant costumes, epic boss battles, and a mature plot, it has an air of grandeur many modern entries in the series do not. Miles away from the cup noodles and gas stations of FFXV, it has more in common with Star Wars. A princess leading a rebellion against an evil empire teams up with a sky pirate being pursued by bounty hunters… And now the eye candy is sweeter, the controls are smoother and the OST has been re-recorded with a full orchestra. Ardent FFXII fans say ‘yay’.
