Lauren Greenfield

Lauren Greenfield is a leading American documentary photographer who has also maintained a parallel and sometimes overlapping career as a film-maker. She uses her stills and movie cameras to critically examine contemporary culture, focusing on issues from eating disorders and female self-image to consumerism and the pursuit of wealth.

How did she get started in photography?

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1966, Greenfield studied at Harvard University. While there, she developed an interest in today’s culture, combined with photography and film-making. She graduated in 1987 with a degree in Visual & Environmental Studies, then worked as an intern on National Geographic. Afterwards she received a grant from the organisation to work on her first major photo-essay,
