FARMING and conservation bodies have welcomed the launch of a new Government review to step up the fight against waste crime.
Organised criminals running illegal waste dumps and fly-tipping are blighting local communities,’ Defra Secretary Michael Gove said last week. ‘The time is right for us to look at how we can best tackle these antisocial and inexcusable crimes.’
Fly-tipping has seen a massive surge in the past few years. It now affects almost two-thirds of farmers and landowners across the country, costing them about £844 in clean-up costs for each incident, according to the CLA. Worse, adds the Green Alliance, it poses significant risks to health and the environment, because of toxic fumes and the risk of dangerous substances contaminating land and waterways.
