Aaron Burr (1756–1836)…
was a young superstar. Orphaned at age two, he graduated from college at 16 and entered the Continental army when he was 19. After the Revolution, he practiced law and became involved in New York politics as an assemblyman, attorney general, and United States senator.
His star kept rising. As the northern leader of the Democratic-Republican Party, Burr ran for vice president alongside Thomas Jefferson in 1800. However, because there was no separate ballot for president and vice president, Burr and Jefferson tied for president! The House of Representatives selected Jefferson as president and Burr as vice president.
