The Cocktail actor, in a freewheeling chat with Subhojit Ghosh, shares her thoughts about her films and more

Which was that deciding moment when you made up your mind on becoming an actor?

There was never any such moment! In fact when I look back, I realize that I was an actor way before I had the time to even think about it! Cocktail happened so quickly and unexpectedly that I didn’t even realize what I was getting into. It was only after the film released and people started appreciating my performance that it began to sink in. That’s when I realised how much I enjoyed the process of playing Meera and that I wanted to play more and more characters and experiment with different kinds of films. Cocktail was the best thing to have happened to me professionally, and I’m grateful that it turned out the way it did.

Do you think you have progressed in your career the way you had expected?

I think I have certainly progressed from where I began. I was a complete outsider to the industry when I started out and was really lucky to have a debut like Cocktail. Since then, whether it’s been Cocktail or Happy Bhag Jayegi or Lucknow Central or Parmanu, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and work with some incredible people along the way. I’m also happy that I’ve had the opportunity to play the kind of roles that I have and be part of films that I’ve truly enjoyed working on. And along the way I’ve developed this hunger to do a lot more work. Finding the right films can sometimes be a slow, frustrating process but that apart, I’m happy with my journey so far.

The time gap between your first and second film is four years. What took so long?
