That’s how Jeremy Remington described the horrifying scene outside a Chinook helicopter as the National Guard airlifted him out of California’s Mammoth Pool Reservoir campsite on Sept. 5.

“I’ve had close calls in my life, but nothing like that,” he added. “We all thought we were goners. I feel very lucky to be alive.”
