The Prodigal Son Returns

Scott Eastwood claims he’s a better dancer than JOHN BOYEGA, but the latter begs to differ.

When John Boyega didn’t show up at the Pacific Rim: Uprising junket in Beijing, 8 DAYS was kinda bummed. But we got the next best thing: a phoner with the 26-year-old London-born Nigerian, who’s not only the star of the monsters-vs-robots rumble but a producer (via his company UpperRoom Entertainment) as well. Boyega was calling us from New York, where it was almost 10am and we assumed he was about to kick off a hectic day of promotional activities. During the 10-minute interview, the budding multi-hyphenate gave off a no-nonsense, strictly business vibe, keeping his answers short and snappy. Very producer-y.
8 DAYS: Pacific Rim: Uprising marks your debut as a producer. Did you have any preconceived notions about producing and did those ideas change after working on the movie?
JOHN BOYEGA: [When I approached] this as a producer, we didn’t have as much time as most studio films have for movies of this size and magnitude, considering the amount of visual effects involved, so I knew that was going to be a challenge. As an actor, I worked a full day; as a producer, I worked at night most times. It was a balancing act, but I loved it, the combination of acting and producing the project. It’s something I wish to continue.
Did you find producing distracting since you’re acting as well?
Never, ever. It’s all within the same project. It works for the benefit of the other.
Did working on the Star Wars movies teach you anything about producing?
