Playwright HARESH SHARMA on making it as a professional writer, and how to write for everyday occasions.
WHO IS HE? Haresh Sharma, 51. The thespian has been the resident playwright for theatre company The Necessary Stage since 1990. He was awarded the Cultural Medallion in 2015, and recently wrote his first musical, the upcoming Beatrice Chia-Richmond-directed Tropicana the Musical about the iconic ’60s topless cabaret. Haresh explains, “Beatrice asked me to write the musical, ’cos we’ve worked together for the opening and closing ceremonies of the SEA Games and for the National Day Parade. I said, ‘Are you sure? I’m not your go-to guy for musicals!’ I only wrote the dialogue, so I worked closely with the lyricist and composer for [the songs].”
