Luke Evans, 37, has played villains before (see Fast & Furious 6), but in Beauty and the Beast, it’s the first time the Welsh hunk is playing one — as Gaston, Belle's rogue suitor — who sings.
8 DAYS: How different is your take on Gaston from the animated film?
LUKE EVANS: He’s a bit of everything. He’s a loveable rogue in the beginning of the movie. People will laugh at him. He’s harmless, you know. He’s just a self-absorbed, narcissistic man who lives in this little village, where he thinks he’s the king. There are many comedy moments between him and his sidekick, LeFou. The challenge is to send him to the dark places as a villain.
Your scenes with LeFou, played Josh Gad, are hilarious. Were they scripted or improvised?
There were loads of ad-libbed moments, actually. [Director] Bill Condon allowed us to play with the dialogue. Because in comedy, the funniest moments are sometimes the spontaneous ones. I did a lot of ad-libbing with Kevin Kline [who plays Belle’s father, Maurice] as well in the forest scenes.
