Change In The Wine Dynamics
SOCIETY
|March 2016
At 35, Ajay Shetty still has a boyish charm and a friendly demeanour. But, make no mistake, he is the Managing Director of Myra Vineyards, a bootstrap start-up that has changed the wine dynamics in Karnataka.
How easy is it to chuck a plush banking job abroad and come back to India to start a wine brand? Well, if that sounds like a farfetched question, Ajay Shetty did exactly that, when almost overnight, he gave up a well-paying job as a banker in Hong Kong and returned to Bengaluru to start Myra Wines. One of the key drivers to set up Myra has been to demystify wines, and more importantly, make wine more accessible to everyone. It is little wonder then that in close to four years, his Sauvignon Blanc won a bronze and Myra’s Shiraz won the gold medal at the Indian Consumers Choice Awards (IWCCA) for being the favourite premium wine in the non-reserve Shiraz category.
