3 Rs To Empower Women

Women literacy is a topic that is spoken about in corporate boardrooms, socialite Wevents, and, on occasions a phrase of vanity between cocktails in high octane parties. Though, several corporate houses bring the initiative into effect, and make educating the girl child in rural backdrops a mission, only a handful actually set forth educating women who are located in Jhuggi Jhopdi (JJ) clusters in their vicinity to ensure that these women are empowered with the 3 Rs (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic), thus making them self-reliant. Human Capital interacted with Praveer Sinha, CEO and MD, TPDDL, who said that the Women Literacy Programme is not merely targeting the literacy of women, but compositely focuses on overall empowerment of women, family and society as a whole. The programme has enabled TPDDL to get a place in the hearts of thousands of families residing in North & North West Delhi.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TDPPL) has 220 listed JJ clusters and resettlement colonies fall in company's area of operation i.e. North and North West of Delhi. Like every migratory community, the individuals residing in these clusters are the poorest of poor and lack basic amenities of health, hygiene, education, employment and infrastructure. The women residing here are illiterate, and never had an opportunity to enroll for formal education. The lack of basic education had put severe roadblocks in the intellectual and economic development of these women. TPDDL identified this concern as one of the areas of intervention and ventured into Women Literacy Programme for women since 2006-07.

An Aggrieved Woman?

The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition And Redressal) Act, 2013 has mandated that it is illegal to sexually harass women, working or otherwise, at the workplace. However, it certainly is strange that the law did not feel the need to include men, and, also did not clearly demarcate the boundaries of liability for the employer.
