Following the rebuilding of Tulbagh after the 1969 earthquake, Brian Berkman has discovered that this historic town is experiencing yet another revival with trendy art galleries and farm-to-table dining.
The farm-to-table aspirations of ‘locavores’ the world over becomes a reality at Eikelaan Farm Cottages, situated just a few minutes outside the charming and historic town of Tulbagh in the Western Cape.
The three cottages, namely Witzenberg, Obiqua and Winterhoek, sit neatly around a beautifully planted garden, rich in trees and birdlife. To keep guests busy and entertained, within 100m of the dwellings is an enclosed pool area complete with loungers, a large covered entertainment area, a shared braai facility, and a table tennis table. The cottages also have shared access to a children’s play area with a jungle gym and swings. Sheep, rabbits and free-range chickens complete the property’s ‘farmyard feel’.
EAT FRESH FROM THE FARM
Eikelaan is famous for the organic vegetables, herbs and free-range livestock and poultry it produces. Guests who want to cater for themselves can order this produce ahead of time so that their cottage fridge will be stocked with farm-fresh food upon their arrival. Apart from the farm’s own produce, guests can also pre-order imported Italian deli favourites. The meat is usually sold frozen, so guests should stipulate, upon ordering, if they’d prefer ready-to-cook options. There is also a wide selection of gluten-free products available.
