I always find it baffling when people tell me they think they would get restless on a cruise. The notion that all there is to do on sea days is sunbathe, stare at the sea or read a book couldn’t be further from the truth.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of all three (especially staring in wonder at the ever-changing sea). But there is so much to do on board that I’m constantly craving more hours in the day to fit everything in.

On an ocean-going ship, my typical day at sea starts around 6.30am, when I try to do enough laps of the deck to equal at least a couple of miles; partly because I love mornings, but also so I can then feel less guilty about overindulging for the rest of the day (my inner disciplinarian does a disappearing act the minute I step on board).
