March 2017

The weight of expectation is always heavy at the Tokyo Auto Salon. What new trends will emerge this year? What amazing or eyes earingly bad products will greet you once you start walking around? However, the problem with expectation is the possibility of disappointment, and there's no doubt new trends or mind-blowing products were perhaps thin on the ground in 2017 compared with previous years.

Having said that, there were many notable highlights. Japan's wheel manufacturers in particular seem to have stepped up their game, perhaps in retaliation to fierce overseas competition, with several new designs on display. RAYS TE037 Dura obviously got a lot of stares, but WORK and Enkei's new designs, especially the ones aimed at kyusha or classic cars found much love from show goers too. Blitz's turbo kit for the 2.0-litre ND MX-5 will no doubt have many salivating, while those after bolt-on wide fenders will surely love the new offerings from Pandem Rocket Bunny and others. Kuhl Racing's incredible new bonnet modifications caused many a stare, as did their fully engraved demo cars, and there was no doubt the S660 love-in warmed many hearts.
