FIRST DRIVE Powerful engine, plus updates inside and out, freshen up family car
THE Mazda 6 has been around for a while now. So long, in fact, that this is the second time the Japanese brand’s flagship saloon has been updated, following a mild face lift in 2015.
Despite its age relative to fresher rivals such as the Volkswagen Passat and Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport, it’s still a car we rate quite highly, thanks to its blend of performance and practicality.
Take a glance at the new Mazda 6 and you’ll notice very few design changes. You’ll pick out the new grille, which is deeper set and shinier than before, while updated chrome rimmed headlights appear, too.
But the big news comes inside and under the bonnet. For 2018, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol joins the Mazda 6’s power roster. It seems to fly in the face of current downsizing and turbocharging trends, with the naturally aspirated unit possessing a charming old-school feel.
