How was 2017 for your sugar cane agribusiness? Our area experienced good rainfall in 2017, so Milford Estate’s sugar cane production was good. The benefits of this were dampened by various factors during the year, however. These included a drop in domestic demand for sugar, and the impact of South Africa’s decision to import sugar due to decreased local production levels as a result of low rainfall in the country’s sugar cane-growing areas. The imports lowered the price per ton paid to farmers for their sugar cane. This had a negative impact on Milford Estate’s turnover.
