Korhaan confrontation
In the past, the endemic Southern Black Korhaan Afrotis afra was regularly encountered in the fynbos, renosterveld and succulent karoo of the Western and Eastern Cape, but today it is seldom seen. A polygynous species, it is known for the spectacular aerial display that the courting male performs to impress females. One or occasionally two eggs are laid in spring in a slight depression in bare soil and covered with strands of grass. Only the female incubates and broods the eggs and chicks, but both male and female are vigilant in their defence and actively drive out potential predators.
