"Jon Freeman at last actually cuts metal, starting with the wheels and axles for Brushless Brute, his dual gauge petrol-electric locomotive. Jason Ballamy machines the valve chest and cover for his ‘Muncaster’ entablature engine. Stephen Wessel considers how best to achieve a solid and stable track bed for his 5 inch gauge garden railway. Roger Backhouse drops in on the Poppleton Community Railway Nursery, which used to grow flowers for railway station hanging baskets but which is now a volunteer-run charity providing therapeutic activities. Jon Edney quarters the wheels for his 7¼ inch gauge Bridget locomotive. Chris Rayward makes the petticoat pipe for his 5 inch gauge LNWR ‘D’ tank locomotive. David Haythornthwaite makes a start on his one inch scale Model Engineer beam engine’s most complex component, the governor. Mark Smithers features Otter, a new Bagnall locomotive for the Groudle Glen railway, built at the North Bay Railway, Scarborough. Mick Knights begins the final assembly of his quarter scale Bentley Rotary aero engine. John Arrowsmith heads for the Malvern Hills, where he attends this year’s Welland Steam Rally. Our ‘Man in a Shed’, James Wells, encounters a sand storm and is inspired to build a distinctly non-parallel beam engine."
