In the acclaimed first season of Upright, Tim Minchin starred as Lachlan “Lucky” Flynn, a bloke towing his family piano across Australia, who, after a car accident in the middle of nowhere, acquired teenage travel companion Meg, played by Milly Alcock.

Minchin made Lucky a flawed and flaky character who becomes a surrogate dad to the headstrong teenager. It finished with an emotional finale that was also a natural ending to its characters’ journeys. All of which might make you wonder: why a second season?

His original intention was not to, Minchin told the Listener when he was last in New Zealand while touring in his other career as a singer-songwriter.

But the show’s writers reconvened and pondered what a second season story would be.
