2025 was the year Al slop oozed into every corner of the internet. I'm taking the summer to go cold turkey.

If 2023 was the year everyone rushed to play with AI and 2024 was when it started quietly running in the background of everything, then 2025 will go down as the year of AI slop - the moment the internet was served up an all-you-can-eat buffet of reheated, low-effort, machine-generated mush.

Macquarie Dictionary crowned "AI slop" its word of the year, picking up on the incredulous comments beneath thousands of social media clips posted to Facebook and created by AI video generators. It encompasses the saccharine motivational LinkedIn post, the news "explainer" that misunderstands its own headline and the YouTube crisis video where the disaster, the presenter and the fluffy labrador are all generated by a bank of Nvidia computer chips in a distant data centre.
