Ptosis and Vision - How Droopy Eyelids Affect Eye Health
Health Vision
|December 2024
Ptosis, also known as droopy eyelid, is a condition characterized by the sagging of one or both upper eyelids. While it can occur at any age, ptosis often affects older adults due to the natural aging process.
Causes of Ptosis
Ptosis can result from various factors, broadly classified into congenital and acquired causes:
Congenital Ptosis:
- Occurs at birth due to improper development of the levator muscle, responsible for lifting the eyelid.
- Genetic predisposition can also play a role.
Acquired Ptosis
- Age-related Ptosis: Weakening or stretching of the levator muscle or its tendon (aponeurosis) over time.
- Trauma: Injury to the eye or eyelid can disrupt the function of the levator muscle.
- Neurological Disorders: Conditions such as Horner’s syndrome or myasthenia gravis affect the nerves controlling eyelid movement.
- Mechanical Ptosis: Caused by excess weight on the eyelid due to tumors, cysts, or severe swelling.
- Eye Surgery Complications: Damage to the levator muscle during procedures like cataract surgery.
Symptoms
Ptosis symptoms can vary depending on its severity and underlying cause:
- Drooping of one or both eyelids, ranging from mild to severe.
