Ptosis and Vision - How Droopy Eyelids Affect Eye Health

Causes of Ptosis

Ptosis can result from various factors, broadly classified into congenital and acquired causes:

Congenital Ptosis:

  • Occurs at birth due to improper development of the levator muscle, responsible for lifting the eyelid.

  • Genetic predisposition can also play a role.

Acquired Ptosis

  • Age-related Ptosis: Weakening or stretching of the levator muscle or its tendon (aponeurosis) over time.

  • Trauma: Injury to the eye or eyelid can disrupt the function of the levator muscle.

  • Neurological Disorders: Conditions such as Horner’s syndrome or myasthenia gravis affect the nerves controlling eyelid movement.

  • Mechanical Ptosis: Caused by excess weight on the eyelid due to tumors, cysts, or severe swelling.

  • Eye Surgery Complications: Damage to the levator muscle during procedures like cataract surgery.

Symptoms

Ptosis symptoms can vary depending on its severity and underlying cause:

  • Drooping of one or both eyelids, ranging from mild to severe.
