Closing the Gap: Why Women Are Missing Out on Crucial Cardiovascular Disease Treatments
Health Vision
|January 2025
Despite progress, research shows that women are often overlooked when it comes to receiving the most effective cardiovascular interventions.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death globally, and while significant advancements have been made in the medical management of heart disease and stroke, women continue to be disproportionately affected by inadequate treatment.
The Gender Gap in Cardiovascular Treatment
Historically, cardiovascular research has been male-centric, with clinical trials predominantly involving men. This has led to an incomplete understanding of how CVD presents and progresses in women, and subsequently, how treatments should be tailored to them. While there has been progress in recognizing the unique symptoms and risk factors women experience, such as the role of hormones, pregnancy-related conditions, and autoimmune diseases, there is still a significant gap in the application of appropriate treatments for women.
Women with cardiovascular disease often experience different symptoms compared to men. For instance, chest pain, shortness of breath, and nausea might present differently in women, leading to delayed diagnoses and, in some cases, missed opportunities for intervention. The subtle nature of these symptoms is often not taken as seriously.
This discrepancy is partly due to gender biases in healthcare and a historical lack of emphasis on how cardiovascular risk factors uniquely affect women. As a result, many women are left with uncontrolled hypertension or cholesterol levels, putting them at greater risk for heart disease and stroke, conditions that are preventable with proper management.
