Group of Moms Among 9 Killed in Avalanche Near Lake Tahoe
The deadliest avalanche in modern California history struck on Feb. 17, killing nine people—among them, a group of close friends and moms returning from a three-day backcountry ski trip near Lake Tahoe. “We are … doing our best to care for one another,” relatives of six of the victims—Carrie Atkin, Liz Clabaugh, Danielle Keatley, Kate Morse, Caroline Sekar (Clabaugh’s sister) and Kate Vitt—told People in a statement. The women, who lived in the Tahoe, San Francisco and Boise, Idaho, areas, “cherished time together in the mountains,” according to their families. “The kids and I are shattered,” Atkin’s widower, Pete, told The New York Times of their two children. Sekar and Vitt also had two kids each.

The Risk Report
VIKTOR ORBAN AND HIS FIDESZ party have led Hungary since 2010, long enough that they've become a kind of fact of European life. His trademark right-wing populism, his attacks on the E.U. and its liberal values, and his warnings that support for Ukraine risks conflict with Russia have become a familiar obstacle for efforts in Brussels to maintain E.U. unity.

Michael B. Jordan & Delroy Lindo Were Interrupted at BAFTAs by a Man With Tourette's Blurting Out the N-Word
One of the most-discussed moments at the BAFTA awards in London on Feb. 22 came when a man in the audience blurted out a racial slur while Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan, 39, and Delroy Lindo, 73, were presenting an award. The man, John Davidson, has Tourette’s syndrome, which can cause someone to make involuntary noises and utterances, and he was there to support I Swear, a nominated movie based on his life.

Inside the Making of a Classic '80s Rom-Com
Four decades after it hit theaters, 1986’s Pretty in Pink remains one of the most enduring teen films of its time. Written by John Hughes, it cemented the director’s Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club star Molly Ringwald as prom queen of an era. It was also the first film directed by Howard Deutch, who was working on music videos when his friend Hughes sent him two scripts. One was Pretty in Pink, which, Deutch, 75, tells People, “made me cry.”

FOSSIL FUEL VS.WINTER SPORT
I grew up in Greenland skiing and shooting, and competed for Denmark in biathlon at the Milano Cortina Olympics. But the sport I love is becoming harder to recognize as a winter sport at all. At the world championships in Czechia in 2024, I skied on snow that was reduced to a narrow artificial strip, surrounded by grass and mud. Temperatures neared a balmy 50°F in the middle of February.
