Photography For The Soul

She got her first ever C in her photography course in high school, a far cry from the straight As she otherwise garnered. “I don’t know if I saw this as some sort of challenge but something stuck,” she says. And it really did stick indelibly as she is now an avid photographer who admits to working on five bodies of work simultaneously. Her photography reflects the intricate workings of a mind that accords significance and meaning to everything and sees beyond the superficial, surface layer that people normally can’t see past. In her own words, she delves into the who, what, when, where, and why of being, compounded by her interest in the sociological nature of people. This month, we are speaking to Lois Bielefeld, a native of Milwaukee in the Midwestern United States, who has carved a niche for herself as quite a maverick photographer. She is a member of the Portrait Society Gallery, a contemporary art gallery dedicated to the issues surrounding the genre of portraiture.

'Inspiring Activity In A Sedentary World'

Growing up among the expanses of mountains and swathes of red rock in Southern Utah which he affectionately calls home, he warmly recounts how it nurtures his creative spirit. It also bolsters his innate drive to seek adventure, and shapes his perception of nature as a “sacred place”. “The mountains of northern Utah and Red Rock in southern Utah inspire me and are places that I go to help nurture the creative spirit,” he says. Having enjoyed team and individual sports in school, he pursued sports and adventure sports when he made his foray into photography for the first time after deciding to forsake his full-time job for it. “Being able to get into the outdoors and combine my passion for photography with the sports I grew up with was a dream come true,” he elaborates. While his dream of having a gallery and pursuing landscape photography still lingers, his focus shifted early to capturing action and sports, and building a professional career around commercial and advertising work. We are talking to Kevin Winzeler this month, whose work boasts exemplary sports and action photographs, coupled with a grand clientele that includes Adobe Systems, Columbia Sportswear, Skiing Magazine, and Skullcandy.

Using Shadows And Lights For Compositions

Using Shadows And Lights For Compositions

As photographers, we will always notice one thing first and that is light. In fact, we often think of light as one of the most important aspects of photography. On the other hand, shadows may seem to be less important or simply a lack of light. This would be a major mistake though, as for light is nothing without shadows. Shadows are not simply a dark mass that borders the light. Rather, shadows are an entity as important as the light. It is the shadows that shape the light, draw attention to the light, and integrate with the light to produce striking photographic opportunities. If we are to reach our full potential as photographers, we must think as much in terms of mastering the shadows, as we do of mastering the light. This article will look into shadows and lights, and how photographs can be created using both the entities.
