I was sitting at my computer, fidgeting with my phone, spinning around in my chair, when Sarah-Jane strolled in from the shops to say she had a present for me.
It wasn’t my birthday, and nor was it even Father’s Day, a holiday invented by hardware stores to equip dads with the tools they need to finally get around to fixing things in the house. (‘A packet of little brass picture hooks and a hammer? Oh, you shouldn’t have!’)
But here, the only special occasion was the present itself, which Sarah-Jane handed to me with a flourish. It was a bright-green metallic object, flat, on a slightly raised base, with three round blades that had holes in the middle.
