or most of us with an average income, a buffalo hunt will remain on the wish list. However, we can still share in the thrill of challenging and taking down Africa’s Black Death through the stories written by the lucky few who have had this privilege. In this issue, we bring you a few of these buffalo hunting adventures.
LD Jennings is a privileged hunter indeed. He shot not just one but two Cape buffalo bulls on the same hunt, although the second one was taken unintentionally. It was one of his best hunts ever, which he describes as follows: “This is what Boddington and Flack spoke about in their books, this feeling in this moment, standing there in the bushveld next to Africa’s Black Death.” Read all about it in “Buffalo hunting in the western Bushveld”.
In “Buffalo hunt for the books”, Dempsey Bayly shares the story of White Gap, an old dagga boy that gave the hunting party a run for their money and caused some nail-biting moments! Hunting a buffalo with a bow and arrow is not for the faint-hearted. Danie Geel braved Africa’s Black Death with a bow and arrow and gives advice on the bow-and-arrow set-up to take down this tenacious beast. Also make sure to read Prof J du P Bothma’s insightful article on the early origins and other features of the buffalo.
In “The truth behind the hunting value of animals”, Brandon van Zyl writes that the demand for hunting in Africa seems to be at an all-time high and that we can expect a rise in the prices of huntable species. This bodes well for the hunting and game-breeding industry.
