Day on 5 September to raise awareness of the plight of dwindling vulture
populations worldwide. The white-backed vulture graces our cover this month
and features in our species article by Prof J du P Bothma (p 58), as well as in our
monthly column, “Birding on your hunting trip” (p 24). This bird is endangered due
to poisoning and habitat destruction, and according to Prof Bothma, the continental
population has been decreasing steadily since 1922. The media and initiatives such
as this special awareness day play a crucial role in educating the public about the
importance of conservation.
