TRIBUTE TO PIET WARREN / HULDEBLYK AAN PIET WARREN
In 1981 kon Piet Warren sy pa oortuig om hul vrylopende swartwitpense se loopgebied buite Gravelotte toe te span nadat ’n jagondernemer hulle R1 000 aangebied het om ’n swartwitpensbul daar te laat jag. In die vorige uitgawe van WILD & JAG het ons oom Piet Warren van naderby leer ken – ’n man wat ’n legende in sy eie leeftyd geword het. Ná byna 40 jaar van swartwitpense teel, het hy egter besluit dis tyd om die tuig neer te lê en het sy laaste veiling gehou. Oom Piet, also known as Makhomo, the Xitsonga name given to him, pioneered the art of selecting top genetics, thereby making a valuable contribution to the wildlife industry. What stands out for me is that he realised the value of hunting. He also had a definite influence on my late father, Jan van der Walt, in naming this publication GAME & HUNT, as they both knew that, had it not been for hunting, there would be no game-breeding, ecotourism or game-meat industry in South Africa.
