WOMEN IN THE HUNTING FIELD AND GAME INDUSTRY With National Women’s Day being celebrated as a public holiday in South Africa on 9 August each year, we decided to clad this month’s issue in a dash of pink for a feminine touch, especially for the women in our lives – girlfriends, grandmothers, mothers, sisters and sisters-in-law. It is an extra, month-long treat for our local ladies, as International Women’s Day is only celebrated on 8 March worldwide. On p 16–17 Erika Strydom tells us how she started shooting and hunting as a wife, mother and grandmother at the age of 55, while Bianca Venter writes that hunting is an exciting activity for the whole family (p 25). Turn to p 50 for “Joan of Alldays”, a tongue-in-cheek article by Meyer le Roux of Buffelsfontein Baard-olie, in which he explains why we can learn so much from women hunters. In “A woman who hunts” on p 63–64, Luzanne Grant shares the precious experience of being able to hunt with her daughter. We talk to Annette Oelofse about her involvement of more than four decades in the game industry. Read more on p 118–120 about this exceptional woman and the special bond shared by her family on Mount Etjo in Namibia. Behind the scenes we also visited two formidable women game ranchers, Ellalien Davey and Tina de Jager, as well as women who support their husbands in the game industry – Martisan Theron, Brenda Roothman en Carolien Malan.
