JUST RUN

Spartan Race is, at its core, a race. Sure there are obstacles thrown in to make you work, and we don’t keep the race flat. We also make you do burpees for each obstacle you miss in order to insure you don’t get comfy. In the end though it is absolutely a race and that means running.

What we find though is even some of the fittest people on our course aren’t comfortable doing something as adults that we did so often as children, for hours, smiling the whole time. Yet it seems running is a bad word in some circles. It is still one of the most efficient modes of transportation we have, not to mention one of the best ways to lose weight and feel better. This issue of Spartan Magazine is all about that oh so important activity. You can climb walls, ropes, throw a spear, but if you can’t run you’re missing a key part of this whole thing. So read a little, then strap on your shoes, get outside, and just run. You’ll find if you do this enough your next race, will be your best race.

Its time again for the World Championship. The event, held in Killington VT, is easily our must brutal race of the year. 2014 promises to push people no matter what distance they are coming to do. While we spend days devising ways to make the course challenging its important that you all know, you can do it. No matter how hard the course you can finish. Sure you may have to do burpees if you can’t do an obstacle but you can still cross that finish line if you just don’t give up on yourself. Everyone at Spartan believes in you and is there to cheer you on, even when you may not believe in yourself. So whether you are an Elite athlete coming to claim glory, or if you are just coming out to test yourself the World Championship is an event you will never forget. Independence day. Who doesn’t love the 4th of July? Spending time with family and friends celebrating our hard fought, and won, independence by camping, cooking out, fireworks, and of course BURPEES. 
Each day I celebrate my independence from the things in life that would normally hold me back by doing burpees in the morning. I don’t know how many I have done by now but it’s a lot. Every race I go to I see thousands of burpees being pounded out by racers from all walks of life and I can’t help but feel a sense of pride that these people have taken up the call to revolution against a soft and sedentary lifestyle. Some of them couldn’t walk a mile before and here they are, fighting like hell to make it through mile after mile and hard as hell obstacles just to be able to say they did it, they completed one of the hardest events of their life. No cheating, no going around the obstacle, facing each challenge head on and if they fail they Spartan Up, do their burpees, and press on with the fight. Now if that doesn’t embody the American Spirit I don’t know what does.
