We are pleased to present My Alvernia #37 as we celebrate 58 years of serving all with love. We interviewed two Sisters and learned that the FMDM Sisters have in fact been serving Singaporeans for some 70 years and counting, more than a decade before the hospital opened. While a lot has changed, the practice of helping the community, among other things, has endured (pg 12). Colorectal cancer is the most common type of cancer in Singapore and it is on the rise. We learn more about its link with diabetes and how it can be treated. (pg 18). Finally, vaccinations are a scientifically proven form of preventive medicine against a wide range of infections. We look at the importance of vaccinations for the elderly (pg 36).
