We live in a fast-paced world (as our theme this issue, Fast and Furious, celebrates) and there̕s always an easy temptation at the end of a busy day to fl ick on the television or surf the Net, rather than to open a book. But to do so is really to miss out on one of the simplest and most enriching pleasures humankind has devised for itself – the joy of reading. Books allow us to learn new things, to be a witness to history, to see inside the soul of a person, to be transported to another time, another place, another life, another world.

If only life was like the movies. Then again, maybe not. We are inspired by cinema in more ways than one, but as we all know, there are downsides to the glitzy world of showbiz. The pressure, the paparazzi, the people you seek to entertain it sometimes can be all too much for one to bear. But of course, there\'s the good stuff, too. The entertainment arena has proved to be an avenue where Asians can showcase their creative talent to the world, excelling in front of, or behind the camera. Everyone loves a good bargain. That feeling of smug satisfaction of snagging a genuine value-for-money deal is incomparable. But at the same time, there is no wrong in splurging occasionally on something worthwhile, or meaningful. Take care that you do not fall prey to the adage: penny wise, pound foolish. There is also the bipolar distribution of wealth.

“Fusion” is a word that is somewhat loosely used nowadays, an umbrella term that espouses any two or more things thrown together in a mix that somehow produces a betterthan- expected result. But to some, fusion is not merely a label – it is a way of life, a symbol of culture. Take the Peranakans, whose very existence stems from a rich tapestry of Chinese and Malay heritage. Fusion is in their language, in their food, in their dressing – in their everything. In this case, fusion is }their identity.

When I was younger, my mother and my aunt used to take me to visit various social welfare centres around Singapore, especially during the school holidays. The few times I dared to grumble (albeit under my breath) that I sometimes felt awkward interacting with the residents of those homes, my aunt would always firmly reply, “ Not everyone is born with compassion, but compassion can be cultivated. You’ll never know what it is like to be in need until you have experience with those in need.” And she was right...
