Fiji the perfect barometer for world climate change
As the new president of the United Nation’s Climate
Change Conference, Fiji is surely the perfect barometer for
the damage earth’s inhabitants are inflicting on their planet.
Even before assuming the UN role in November, Fiji had
begun making room for its Kiribati neighbours, displaced by
rising oceans. Fiji is also counting the human and economic
cost of increasingly extreme weather events.
In February, 2016, Cyclone Winston claimed 44 lives and
cost Fiji the equivalent of one third of its GDP.
“We certainly place great importance on highlighting the
impacts of climate change on all vulnerable nations, and
especially those of us in the Pacific, where in some instances,
we face a threat to our very existence,” said Fiji Prime Minister,
Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama in an interview with Corporate
Traveller.
He hopes for a “change of heart” by United States’ president,
Donald Trump, who initiated an American withdrawal from
the Paris Agreement, the international accord intended to
combat greenhouse gas emissions.
“Unless we tackle the root cause of these events - global
warming - we all face an unpredictable and terrifying future,
not only in the vulnerable nations but in every part of the
world.”
On a brighter note, this “Focus on Fiji” edition throws the
spotlight onto the country’s burgeoning hospitality industry,
with highlights for both business and leisure travellers.

Travel drops the occasional plum into our laps – and for me a month in Istanbul produced an opportunity to meet and interview Ahmet Ertug, architect, artist and photographer. 
My notes at his studio, in preparing a piece for this edition, describe the joy at meeting such an extraordinary artist:  
“Ahmet Ertug’s part in this drama appears typecast. He looks, acts and sounds like an artist at the top of his game. His appearance and manner are entirely in harmony – from those long flowing grey locks and thoughtful words to gentle gaze that misses not a thing. 
"It strikes immediately that here is a man in single-minded pursuit of perfection – and from all accounts very close to his quarry. 

The wonderful hospitality and wry humour of the good folk of Istanbul is always a joy. On the same journey I am fortunate enough to meet Ali Baba. This Mr Baba is chef at a neighbourhood café in Resitpasa, and something of a magician with the winter fare he prepares for chilly souls stepping in from the snow-clad sidewalk.   

Meeting Ali Baba ranks right up next to my meeting a few years earlier with Socrates. I shared a beer with Socrates at Athens Airport and, like Ali Baba, his real occupation was in the restaurant business, this time a seafood restaurant on Cyprus.  
Such are the joys of travel – meeting magical, mystical characters, accomplished philosophers and serene artists.

The Kiwi spirit of innovation  not confined to history books After two years wandering the South Pacific and Southeast Asia, Corporate Traveller returns home for this “Kiwi Innovators” edition.

 In researching this edition we are first astounded at the list of world firsts born on the shores of Aotearoa, and then by the almost universal reluctance by innovators to talk about their achievements.

 The reasons for this fall into one of two categories – either they don’t understand what all the fuss was about or they are too busy creating new innovations to stop and talk about old ones.

 Perhaps it was the tyranny of distance that was the mother of invention and self-reliance for New Zealand. It’s likely that isolation was a blessing, forcing innovators to create novel solutions rather than looking to what others were doing.

Corporate Traveller’s return to New Caledonia after more than a decade is something of a shock – a very pleasant low voltage jolt – and proof that travellers often need to lower their sights to what is right beneath their nose.

Our conclusion - business and leisure travellers have for years been overlooking the treasure on their doorstep.

New Caledonia, just beyond the horizon for travellers from both New Zealand and Australia, may speak quietly in its quest for a greater share of the island exodus, but it seems Australasians are listening.

Australia is making a very serious pitch for international business. Dreamtime 15, Australia’s signature event showcasing incentive experiences, drew scores of international business events buyers from all around the world.
