"I've never seen it this bad," says Mrs. Nkiru, owner of a boutique in Ago Okota, Lagos. "A gown that used to sell for N5,000 now goes for N15,000. "A mop that was N900 last year now costs N1,800," says Mrs. Mariam, a domestic appliance retailer. "People are hesitant to buy new items, preferring to make do with what they have." The situation is further compounded by the increasing cost of rent and materials, which is squeezing profit margins for businesses.
Provision store owner Mrs. Okoye is also feeling the pinch. "A small pack of noodles that was N5,000 last year now costs N7,677. Rent has also increased, making it difficult for businesses to thrive." The experiences of these small business owners paint a grim picture of Nigeria's current economic landscape. As they struggle to stay afloat, experts warn that the resilience of Nigeria's small business sector is being tested like never before.
