India’s Nuclear Energy Problem
It’s an inevitable question. Conventional wisdom says that the energy demands of an ever-growing number of humans will soon push india’s resources to the limit. India has been among the world’s fastest growing economies for the past two decades. The country continues to lead not only in growth but also in energy demand growth. Over the next 25 years, India needs to raise about 800 million people up out of poverty by producing 3 trillion kWhs of electricity per year. That means India must triple its present power production by 2040. USA will be major contributor to this effort, six new reactors are under construction in India, and 40 more are planned. In just the next 20 years, India expects to increase its present nuclear fleet from 21 reactors. But Nuclear power is not quick fix of energy problem in India. After the Japan incident we have to also think about other sources of energy production. Do India have a choice? We have to think about it.
