United nations general assembly on 11 december 2014 adopted
an India-led resolution declaring June 21 as 'International Day of
Yoga' by resolution 69/131. International Yoga Day aims to raise
awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga. The
draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga was
proposed by India and endorsed by a record 175 member states.
This comes less than three months after Prime Minister Narendra
Modi proposed the idea. 21 June 2015 was celebrated as the Ist
International Day of Yoga.
