The Train World railway museum in Belgium embodies theatrical lighting by Lightemotion to weave an enthralling story, while EFLA Consulting Engineers paint the interiors of Iceland’s Langjökull Glacier in an array of natural light colours to craft a surreal experience. Foster + Partners with David Atkinson demonstrate pure brilliance at the UAE Pavilion as part of the Milan Expo, and on the other hand work in conjunction with Maurice Brill Lighting Design for the Crossrail Place in London.

This issue marks the 20th of our collection; is the first edition of our fourth year running, and celebrates among these milestones our profound interest in enquiry and observation with respect to design. 
This issue raises questions about the integrity of our understanding of architecture, the elements of its composition and the details of its construct.

While hospitality is commonly defined as ‘the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers’, its industry has become synonymous with luxury, comfort and unique experiences. This issue outlines the geometries of contemporary architecture, questioning the role of design in its use, as seen in the opinion pieces by Nishita Kamdar and Rooshad Shroff. Laden with a sense of accomplishment and conviviality, we set foot in the next chapter of our adventure resonating with anticipation of the upcoming Salone Del Mobile. This issue is particularly fascinating for its reflection on time passed and a future yet to be born. The sheer impermanence of Sumant Jayakrishnan’s scenography for a lavish pre-wedding event is juxtaposed with the perpetuity of capturing the day transgressing to night in a single frame as seen in Richard Silver’s Time Slice Series. The images freeze moving time in a single juncture, creating an opportunity to reflect, and at the same moment, project.

We dedicate this issue to a selection of works that bring to the fore a change – something new, something unseen, unheard and compelling. We present a bouquet of projects, products and professionals that have garnered acclaim in the field of architecture, design and lighting design in India as well as internationally. We offer to you the best of the best, the chosen ones, the awarded.

This issue illustrates a changing work culture and how light becomes an essential pigment on the palette that is used to paint its environment. Natural or intended, light is being woven into the fabric of spatial design across multinational corporations, independent enterprises and even boutique holdings - be it the expansive Cisco campus in Bengaluru, or the modest Steelcase WorkLife Centre in Gurugram, the vibrant framework for Pegasystems, or the subtle reflection of context at the Google office, the monochromaticity of Karma Management, or the bright freshness of Ministry of New. Design practices such as RSP Design Consultants, KNS Architects, Edifice Consultants, DIG Architects, DSP Design Associates, Morphogenesis, M Moser Associates, Collaborative Architecture, Ultraconfidentiel and Oculus Light Studio demonstrate an expert hand at recreating the office as an invigorating and enthralling space, outfitting a more interactive and dynamic atmosphere that encourages not only efficiency and productivity, but also a happier workplace.

In Issue #07 we also tip our hats to the women who have worked relentlessly to illuminate our environments. Celebrating International Women’s Month, we speak with pioneers of lighting design such as Motoko Ishii and Barbara Horton, who have helped shape the industry and continue to drive it to a brighter future. Also in conversation is an array of Leading Ladies of Lighting that have worked in India to create enthralling designed environments.

With the industry gaining much momentum, and the lighting design profession claiming considerable recognition, there has been a deluge of projects that saw distinct application of astute intended light in India and abroad. We showcase a peculiar assemblage of works that experiment with the ‘Light’ness of Skin, wherein light becomes an element of playful interaction with the building envelope, directing, deviating and transgressing the experience of the conditioned and unconditioned environments. Case studies such as Maggie’s Centre, Leela Ambience Convention Hotel, Auriga Restaurant and BAD Café are exemplary of this phenomenon, illustrating that light traverses beyond the functional aspect of its physicality to blanket the spatial experience in an emotive semblance.

Our special feature in this issue covers the darc awards, the first of its kind platform for recognition of excellence in the fields of lighting products, lighting design as well as light art. Organised and hosted by our partner company, mondo*arc and darc magazine in the UK, the darc awards attained much acclaim from across the globe and proved to be a great success. The peer-to-peer format of the competition rendered it truly democratic, with over 450 entries across 12 categories, and 5000 votes - for the good, the better and the best. The international lighting design community came together to acknowledge and commemorate distinction in each category, which stood as exemplars of design and innovation in lighting.

Le Corbusier speaks about light in a residence as a ‘purifying brightness that illuminates, unveils and shines through.’
Richard Neutra talks about the ‘radical opening of the building’s skin to the outside world, creating transparencies.’
Tadao Ando attempts to ‘build velvety darkness suited to blurring contours and stripping objects of their gravity.’
And us, we pursue the search for soul through light, and dedicate Issue #04 of mondo*arc india to the personal realm, to homes.

This issue has been particularly challenging - to address the incessant subject of art, and to do so through the perspective of light. While we have touched upon some beguiling topics pertaining to LIGHT : ART, and the SCIENCE of it, there is no saying that we have been able to chronicle its ceaseless impressions. It shall remain our endeavour to slowly discover the profusion of notions this subject has to offer. We hope to bring to you more art, and more light very soon.

Issue 2 comes packed with more Indian content interspersed with international on goings. It was an absolute delight to speak with Indian born, US trained, and truly multicultural lighting designer, Babu Shankar. Talking to the guru of architectural lighting design and celebrating his journey of 25 years, our special feature is on Kaoru Mende and Lighting Planners Associates.

This issue features projects of differing scales, typologies and treatments; and takes us to Milan with Vikram Phadke for a fascinating selection of outstanding products.

With this publication we bring to you mondo*arc magazine from the UK with its architectural brilliance, darc magazine, a sister title with its glorious decorative element and Indian content generated here, that boasts not only of the fascinating work being done by Indian designers, but also international designers in the country. 

With the birth of the Indian avatar of mondo*arc, we discovered a fabulous journey of light through time in India. We chanced upon stories, and myths, fell into spaces and abysses, walked through the tunnels of history and stumbled into the urban maze. Through conversations with some fascinating people, our cover feature story ‘Garbh to Griha’, maps this journey of light in an Indian context. It takes us from the Garbh (womb / inception) to the Griha (dwelling / home). But the question remains, what next?
