The past hundred years have seen a rapid rise in the pace at which technology has changed and affected our lives. We have discovered countless solutions to reduce suffering, increase efficiency, and cheat old age. However, has this progress led to increased happiness, or made our lives any more meaningful?

Perhaps somewhere along the way, we have confused our means with our goals. Perhaps somewhere along the way, we have surrendered our most glorious attribute, our inner freedom to express our true selves through the practice of Virtues. Virtues are the essence of our character, the natural qualities of the divine that exist within every human being. Yet they remain astonishingly unexplored. We have ingeniously learnt to imitate nature, but remain blind to the values that governs her every facet.We investigate history and archeology, but dismiss ancient civilizations as primitive, unable even to conceive, let alone express, these virtues. 

With this issue of The Acropolitan we explore the values and virtues that have remained unchanged through human history. Whether we look to nature for inspiration, or to Scientists and Artists who devote their lives to unravel the secrets of life, it is clear that the solutions transcend geographical, ethnic, and cultural boundaries.

In a time filled with the lure of comfort and increasing distractions, philosophy —love of wisdom and truth—offers a vital guide, providing a deeper lens to view life. While chasing comfort may lead to inertia, growth demands stepping beyond it, facing trials, and making choices that shape who we become. Every decision gives us the power to nurture what serves us and let go of what doesn’t. For instance, when we act in service, we diminish selfishness, allowing generosity to thrive. 
The ancients understood this; in the Olympic Games of the old, body, mind, and spirit were harmonized, and ethics outweighed mere victory. Like life, sports offer opportunities to awaken the hero within by embracing challenges with courage and integrity. 
At New Acropolis, a school of philosophy in the classical tradition, we seek to revive this ancient wisdom to guide our life today. We understand mythology as a vehicle for communicating deep truths; in sports, we strive to live the Olympic spirit of harmony and virtue.

With this issue, we embark on an exploration of the theme of Unity through Diversity. There is an evident intrinsic harmony in the movement and rhythm of nature, exemplified by the cycle of seasons. Winter and Spring manifest differently in nature, providing us with the opportunity to engage with various facets of the same essence.
Similarly, the diversity within humanity presents us with a chance to broaden our perspectives and perceive the world through different lenses. Each unique viewpoint enriches the tapestry of our collective human experience. One notable manifestation of our diversity can be observed in the arts.
Despite the myriad expressions and forms, all classical arts—be it poetry, music, dance, or any other—are fundamentally attempts to connect with and express beauty. Beauty is considered an archetype, a pathway to connect with divinity. Regardless of our differences, there exists a shared resonance with Beauty within us, as suggested by ancient Greek philosophers.
Centuries ago, Zen masters sculpted enigmatic mindscapes of Zen Temple Gardens, inviting inward journeys of self-discovery. Whether through encounters with beauty in nature or moments of contemplation, we may endeavor to awaken the realization of our inherent divinity within us, echoing Plato's concept of Reminiscence.
Philosophy, at its essence, invites us to voyage into the depths of our own selves, where we may unravel the mysteries of existence. We must dare to Discover. Awaken. Transform.

Without a stable axis, it is easy to get lost in the maze of complexity; without a bridge, easy to get stuck in the realm of superficiality that we have in the world today. Philosophy offers a paradigm shift beyond just an alternative perspective, in a journey that leads us past the confines of dogma, whether scientific or religious, it helps to connect to the essence of things as they are meant to be.

Through the philosophical lens, science fundamentally is more than mere reason; it embodies a sincere pursuit for truth, an endeavour to understand the intricacies of life. Art whether manifested in music, painting or any other form, becomes a conduit for our inward journey. It can help unveil our layers and facilitate an exploration of our true identity, allowing us to imagine our potential and strive towards its realization.

To deal with the separation we see today, we need to glimpse the oneness of life. Philosophy is the way to discover the unbreakable connection between the individual and the collective whole. It provides us a compass on how we can lead a more harmonious life 3 more in tune with ourselves, with society, and consequently with life at large.

With the celebrations of World Philosophy Day this past November, and as we transition from winter towards spring, a timeless odyssey beckons us to Discover, Awaken, Transform.

This issue is dedicated to Delia Steinberg Guzmán, the International President of New Acropolis from 1991 till 2020, who passed away peacefully on August 15, 2023. A few years ago, she said in an interview: “The meaning and purpose of life is to be found in this question: What can I do, now that I am here? What can I improve, now that I am here? How can I help, now that I am here?” For us, Delia exemplified this approach - someone who dedicated her life to fulfil her vocation, to help others and to improve the world.
Today, as the world hurtles forward in its relentless pursuit of ‘growth’, have we perhaps forgotten to question the larger purpose of the human journey? The path of philosophy is the invitation to rediscover this. Delia said, “Philosophy is everything; it is everyday life, it is the meaning of life, it is the daily chores, it is the search for moral principles, it is the transformation of a society.”
True to this prescript, some articles herein showcase that whether in the practice of a profession, pursuit of a hobby or learning of an art form, there is of course an aspect of gaining the relevant knowledge, or mastery over the techniques or the process. But perhaps there is something beyond this, that would allow us to go deeper and bring meaning, not just to certain actions to but to our life itself - developing a philosophical point of view.

We live in an era inundated with an overwhelming deluge of information, a lot of it often lacking in accuracy or relevance. To wade through this, we must cultivate the ability to discern the essential from the non-essential and the truth from various forms of falsehood.

It is the nature of our times also, to fragment and segregate. To live in harmony with each other requires embracing and celebrating our differences. Culture, in fact, can be a strong unifying force that nurtures human values, showing that there is a common thread that weaves through diverse ancient civilizations binds the multitude of expressions we see around us today.

In studying civilizations across time and geography, we repeatedly encounter the eternal human quest for understanding the self and the meaning of life. While we rely on our intellect and emotions to help us navigate through this mystery, as human beings we possess the innate potential of intuition, that can transcend the boundaries of reason and allows us to grasp more of the truth.

The search for truth and love of wisdom is the very essence of Philosophy. It offers a broader lens and a more profound perspective on life, enabling us to look beyond the surface and perceive the interconnectedness of existence.

Even in the simple proximity of an insect or the complexity of a bustling metropolis, we can find glimpses of life's principles and the beauty they hold. It is up to us to dare to Discover, Awaken, Transform.

It is evident that we live in a paradox - of global connectivity, and yet separation. While we are engaged in conflicts and are at war with each other in different parts of the world, our planet confronts an ecological crisis. The root cause of both, perhaps, is our disconnect. When we see ourselves as separate from nature, we limit our concern to our needs and wants. Similarly, when we focus on our differences, we tend to bind ourselves within the framework of our upbringing and cultural norms, and narrow our view of what is right.

Instead, can we learn to develop our own moral compass? If we can begin to see not just with our eyes but with our heart, we would be better able to understand our true selves, see another’s perspective and our role in the larger scheme of life. International Mother Earth Day which we celebrate in April, is a good opportunity to remind ourselves that we are diverse expressions of ONE humanity, and collectively we have a responsibility of being custodians of the planet. What a world we could be if we would truly resonate with this idea!

Do we have the courage to dream of this better world, and the perseverance to work towards it? The world today needs leaders who can show the way, by being an example of the change needed…and thus inspire others. The world needs philosophers, who will dare to DISCOVER. AWAKEN. TRANSFORM.

Curated around the theme of World Philosophy Day that we celebrated in November, this issue attempts to explore the essence of philosophy and its relevance and value in today’s times.

We bring to you, in the words of an aspiring philosopher, her discovery of New Acropolis as a school of practical philosophy, and her journey as a part of this community. From another part of the spectrum, Delia Steinberg Guzman, Honorary President of International Organisation New Acropolis, speaks to us about the school and its role today and in the future, as she sees it from her experience of leading it for about 30 years.

We also explore the idea of the universal language of symbols - one that manifests in varied aspects of life such as nature, mythologies, architecture, and much more - as a key that helps us to delve deeper beneath the most visible layers of ourselves, and of life itself. In Giordano Bruno, we see the example of a philosopher, and a life spent on the worthwhile quest of wisdom. We understand from the artist Adam Williamson, about Sacred Geometry as an expression of the archetype of beauty. We learn about Koans, a tool used in Zen Buddhism to encourage the seeker to explore beyond what we can see, hear and understand through our logical minds.

In this issue we bring to you something truly special – an interview with the International President of New Acropolis, who addresses questions about various aspects of the organization, the founding ideals and goals of New Acropolis, and reiterates the need for and value of philosophy in today’s times.

The path of philosophy offers the ability to bring a coherent meaning to our existence.

Many ancient civilizations lived in alignment and harmony with nature. While in some parts of the world there is still an attempt to hold on to this way of life, for many of us we can only see some remnants of this as part of our cultural legacy, as some festivals that mark and celebrate specific moments in nature. Could we use these celebrations as an opportunity to renew that connect and alignment with nature which our ancestors seemed to have?

Today, in the cycle of seasons as we move from autumn towards winter, it perhaps offers an invitation for us to go within. Instead of continually looking outwards, in an attempt to seek validation from others, we must define our own parameters to measure success. We must choose the meaning we wish to give our lives. We must dare to Discover, Awaken, Transform.

Today, while we may seem to be connected to the whole world through internet and social media, we perhaps live more isolated than ever before from life, nature, and even each other. In the consequent uncertainty, often we let our lives pass by, ignoring a nagging sense of discontent. Even worse, we rush to fill the void with the pursuit of more fleeting material goals. Some of us may wonder though, if there is more to life.

If we look to nature, we will see that everything, even a small bee, has a role to play in the web of life. It follows that we too, as an integral part of this nature, would have a purpose, a role. Unlike the bees though, we have a choice. We can keep drifting along with our circumstances, or we can seek our swadharma, and give a meaningful direction to our life. Mythologies across different traditions have alluded to such an internal conflict within the human being that we must engage in.

Education too, traditionally, was the means to prepare us for this, to bring forth the potential within us, to develop the human being to become capable of perceiving more of the Truth, of Life. Therefore, to do justice to the opportunity we have had to be born as a human being, we need to take purposeful steps, to find our place in life.

To truly experience the human existence, we must dare...to Discover, Awaken, Transform.

Still reeling from the global pandemic, many continue to suffer, and the difficulty is compounded by war and widespread economic turmoil. Faced with the enormity of the challenge ahead, it might be tempting to deny it altogether by escaping into the “metaverse”.

However, Plato might caution us against going deeper into the cave. In our own times, Morpheus of The Matrix echoes the same warning. How might we instead dare to face the Truth, in order to alleviate the suffering of those around us? For ultimately, we are all an integral part of the same One Life.

Be it through mythology, art, or magnificent megalithic monuments, our heritage has always pointed towards the glorious role of the human being as a bridge between the terrestrial and the celestial. This has always been the true power of Living Philosophy; to bring to bring beauty, goodness and justice into the world.

On the occasion of International Mother Earth Day, which falls in April, let us look to the wisdom of trees, to all of nature, in order to learn how to harmoniously coexist, and to value our underlying unity that is enriched by our vibrant diversity. Let us dare to hope and build a future by humbly taking our rightful place as custodians of the planet. Let us Discover, Awaken, Transform.

Lurking behind the waves of new strains of the corona virus across the globe, is another illness, more pervasive and far more severe than is noticeable at first glance. For many, apparently guaranteed career paths, and seemingly definitive life plans, have been displaced by deep fears and stressful insecurities rooted in the uncertainty that has clearly surfaced as a characteristic of our times. Although it is evident that this has prompted widespread despair, denial or apathy, a few among the masses face this disease of fear with courage and hope, emerging from the true value of living philosophy, a sincere pursuit of Wisdom, of Truth, and of Goodness.

For these brave torch bearers, it is an opportunity to depart from the false materialistic paradigms that have fed egos and ambitions for many centuries, and which, as humanity, we have blindly taken for granted. Rather than subscribing to the animalistic notion of the survival of the fittest, they show by example what it means to dare to imagine a world in which the privileged happily and generously extend themselves to support the challenged. Instead of power struggles and exploitation, they master the ability to lead themselves, to build governing systems that prioritize the welfare of the collective. Instead of competing to have their voices heard, they produce art and literature that strive to reconnect to timeless archetypes of beauty and harmony.

Traditions world-over have always emphasized this unique capacity of the human being to elevate consciousness, to be motivated by virtues, rather than run the rat race of gathering and securing possessions. It was always essential to educate and transmit how to live a happy and fulfilled life, with the strength and resilience to wrestle the obstacles that life might present; to learn to harmonize oneself with the order inherent in the design of nature.

Let us together also dare to make change; let us together forge new paths, so that those who follow in our footsteps are empowered to give rise to a new civilization. Discover. Awaken. Transform.

For many, it is easy to recognize the prevailing sense of pessimism or hopelessness in our times; the feeling that one is unable to cause a lasting impact on the world, either because of the enormous scale of the challenges that need to be resolved, or because one gets lost in dealing with symptoms, ill equipped to deal with the root cause of the challenges. Perhaps this is one of the attributes that characterizes the onset of a middle ages, which are marked also by a tendency towards separation, competition, and racism – a general degradation of human connections and human values.

As the courageous amongst us persevere to find real solutions for real change, it becomes evident that the secret to change lies not in new laws, new committees, new systems, or new funds or resources. The ancient sages have always maintained that the key lies in purifying human consciousness; individually and collectively, we must embark on a sincere pursuit of Beauty, Goodness, Justice, and Truth.

This suggests that the solution is an internal solution, to be found within the human being, and therefore independent of external circumstances. It relies on the human will to transform, and master himself. Obscure, but ever present through history, we find few great and enigmatic heroes, torch bearers, who dared to set off on this inner path. Let us also dare to follow their example. Let us Discover, Awaken, Transform.

Around the world, mythology and fairytales capture the reality of the universal human quest; sometimes in search of unspeakable treasure, sometimes to unite with a charming prince or rescue a maiden. Almost always, the narrative includes the surpassing of challenges to reveal the heroic and victorious potential of the protagonist, as if reflecting the extraordinary strength that lies within each of our own hearts, if we but dare to unshackle the chains that hold us back.

Wise men and women of the past have repeatedly highlighted the important role of education to discover this inner potential; illuminating virtues such as independence, benevolence, courage, and commitment to what is Good and Just. Because ultimately, for the philosopher it is clear that this is the real enduring gift that humanity needs, if we are to fulfill the responsibility to give rise to a new and better world.

A new and better world must consist of new and better human beings; individuals who have harmonized with the “music of the celestial spheres”, as wise Pythagoras might have called it. Through a diversity of symbols and practices, which at times might even seem contradictory, schools of philosophy have emerged through history, seeking living answers to the questions of purpose, destiny, and the meaning of Life. Let us together begin to unravel the clues they have left us. Let us together Discover, Awaken, and Transform.

Amidst the spectacular diversity of the natural world around us, a silent seeker might grasp the underlying harmony that cohesively unites every component into a magnificent whole. Each element plays a vital and unique role to preserve the integrity of this whole, and together they form the interdependent system that we call Life.

What then, does it really mean to be a human being in this system? The ancient sages have insisted that the answer to this question has silently echoed through the ages, waiting to be heard. It is, however, drowned out by the noise of our daily challenges – our worries, our fears, and our insecurities. But what if we could use these everyday battles to reveal instead our resilience, our courage, and our hope?

Reviving these human values, hand-in-hand, without getting lost in the illusory games of politics and social divides, perhaps is the real opportunity of our times. In various ways, this is what we are exploring in this issue of The Acropolitan Magazine. Dear companions...dear fellow seekers...History beckons. Shall we dare to respond? Discover. Awaken. For decades it has seemed that our civilization is unstoppable; with unprecedented advancements in technology and medicine, sophisticated economic infrastructure, and a celebration of so-called human rights across the globe, we have promised ourselves a glorious future. However, the last several months have revealed the underlying uncertainty and fragility that lie at the foundation of almost every political, economic, and social construct, that we have taken for granted in our times.

For many, it is clear, now more than ever before, that there must be more to life than simply amassing comfort and ensuring survival. There is a need to really live with the resolve to discover and fulfill a meaningful purpose - one that cannot be isolated and disconnected from others. Because ultimately, there is Ubuntu; we are intimately connected to each other, we depend on each other, and our identities are defined in light of each other.

Hence, the opportunity to awaken the inner hero to face the everyday battles where the eternal virtuous Self struggles against the egoistical and ignorant self. The reality of this battle is offered time and again in our mythical and literary traditions. Either like Arjuna, we courageously use our time here to face life on the side of Truth and Goodness, or like Shakespeare’s Othello we allow ourselves to be consumed by the confusion of doubt and fear to meet a tragic end. Ultimately it is a matter of our own inner decision.

Let us therefore Discover and recognize the battlefields that lie before us. Let us Awaken the inner warrior of peace. And let us, together, dare to Transform our world. Let us make our time here count!


As we set off into a post-lockdown world, amidst the challenges and obstacles of the past several months, glorious tales of selfless everyday heroes have emerged across the globe, inviting us to celebrate the human spirit, the indomitable human potential to reach for goodness and altruism. These were perhaps a glimpse of a different paradigm of human civilization, rising not through legislation of economic, ecological, or policy regulations, but by reviving timeless human values, our most sacred and ancient treasure.

Let the inner dignity and courage of a Samurai Warrior become our prized armor with which to face the uncertain times which lie ahead. Grace and discipline might characterize our approach in this seemingly new dance of life. While perseverance and responsibility, as of an ecologist, might reveal the sincerity of our resilience.

As the illuminating fireflies announce the arrival of a nourishing monsoon, and the wolf’s howl invites the silver light of the moon to kiss the Earth, so too perhaps it is the time for philosophers and idealists to sound the clarion, rekindling hope in the innermost recesses of the heart.

Let us dare to Discover our inner strength, Awaken to the opportunity of our times, and Transform our world.

In Ancient Greece, the Acropolis referred to the sacred centre, that lay higher than the rest of the city. It was a place of inspiration; a bridge that enabled citizens yo connect to the divine, evoking the expression of the higher human virtues. Deriving inspiration from its purpose, The Acropolitan Magazine serves as a tribute to every citizen yearning for these higher principles in all aspects of Life: truth, Beauty, justice, Goodness.

As if a paradox, the unprecedented scope and duration of isolation these past few months has also shed light on the unity of our collective destiny, and our inner strength. Despite the challenges, we’ve encountered countless examples of everyday heroes, fortified with a sense of gratitude and responsibility, and the courage to Be, revealing the best of our human potential.

The ancient adage reminds us always that “This too shall pass.” But as we start to find our new ‘normal’, what learning might we extract from this experience? What mark will it have left within the deep chambers of our hearts? Perhaps we discovered the things that really matter to us, beyond the daily race. And perhaps we might have awoken, once again to the essence of tradition, steeped in the aspiration for Beauty and Harmony, within us and without.

As we set off to make our New Year resolutions, perhaps this year we might resolve to change and improve ourselves by weeding out the grains of separation hidden in the crevices of our own hearts, to dare and reveal our true human identity.

As Mother Earth tirelessly sings her timeless tune of justice, let us dare to trust her laws and live her wisdom. For sages like Rabindranath Tagore insist on the same Truths, that we find inscribed on the walls of the most ancient temples.

This year let us set off to discover ourselves beyond the masks, beyond the fears, and beyond the lethargy. Let us awaken our true potentials, and transform our world. For that is the glorious opportunity that beckons.

Living philosophy is perhaps the most joyful and meaningful way to celebrate life. The heroic philosopher dares to live such a life; he discovers his own inner strength, his own Free Will, and he empowers himself to contribute in the building of a strong and sustainable foundation for a better future.

As we approach the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October 2019, let us take inspiration from Gandhi ji’s courageous pursuit of truth. Even without necessarily agreeing with all aspects of his ideology, one cannot deny his exemplary leadership, characterized by his personal example, and his audacity to dream of, and bring about, real change.

In order to empower real change and improve the quality of our lives, we must learn to guard our own physical, psychological, and spiritual health. It is necessary to go beyond symptoms, superficial and impermanent by nature, and investigate the root cause of our present challenges, so that like an archer, we might, with grace, Will, and concentration, conquer the goal of a new and better world, for new and better human beings.

In our times today, we know how to do many many things. We have accomplished extraordinary technological feats, medical advancements, and lightening speed communication. And we expect, that our civilization is destined for unending progress. 

The question we must ask, however, is: What among all these many things that we know to do, is really worth doing? Is it not the answer to this question that will ultimately make our lives more meaningful? To be able to discern what is really right, in light of the Truth, is perhaps the vital element that might give us the direction we seek. 

Let us therefore, lead by example, and dare to discover the ethical dimension of our human potential. Let us face our fears, and dare to toil, with the altruistic dream of a new and better world in our hearts. Let us become little heroes, fueling the flame of hope, as we give shape to our audacious dream. Let us Discover, Awaken, and Transform...ourselves, and our world.

As all of nature comes to full bloom in the peak of the summer, we witness the magic of life in all its glorious expression! It’s as if the world around eagerly invites us to explore the presence of an all-permeating metaphysical intelligence; we must but learn to see and listen.

In our investigation, we might stumble upon the imprint of this intelligence at sacred locations around the globe. Or perhaps an inward journey might lead us to an inner sacredness – expressed as devotion in the yearning of ancient Indian artists, as objective simplicity in the words of Haiku poetry, or the fraternal spirit fostered among fellow athletes. How beautiful that Life leaves bread crumbs for us, to mark the path to encounter her mysteries!

As life blooms all around, singing the arrival of the Spring, the philosopher can’t help but be mesmerized by the beauty with which Nature adorns herself. It is as if She is celebrating the departure of the old, by rejuvenating, and colorfully extending her invitation to a renewed order. How delightful that around the globe, human civilizations were able to find ways to be able to participate in this moment of transition, through festivals such as holi or purim. Although different in the way they are celebrated, each of these holidays symbolize the chaotic scattering of
the old, clearing the way for the arrival of the new.
